St Patrick's Day out in London

St Patricks’ day is nearly upon us. The official holiday is March 17th which this year falls on a Saturday which means there will be lots to do in London. The main London celebrations will take place in Trafalgar Square between the 16-18th of March. Living in Chigwell, Loughton or Woodford means you can easily access all the fun activity on offer in London but return to relative green and peace at the end of the day.
Over time London has developed a huge Irish population and St Patrick’s Day is a chance to celebrate London’s diversity.  The Irish have always had a reputation for being able to host a good party and this year’s three-day celebration is likely to see more than 125,000 revellers descend on Trafalgar Square to celebrate Ireland’s patron saint.

St Patrick's Day supposedly marks the death of St Patrick, who travelled to Ireland in the fifth century to convince Irish pagans that Christianity was the way forward. The association of Ireland with shamrocks is also down to St Patrick. He reportedly used the three-leaved clover to describe the Holy Trinity to non-believers.

The London St Patrick’s Day parade will lines the streets from Piccadilly to Trafalgar Square and there will be a stream of leprechaun floats, traditional musicians and lots of Irish dancers. The main stage at Trafalgar Square will be surrounded by a street food market and a ‘tea tent’, with a line-up of Irish bands.  Alongside the lively parade of music and ceilidh dancing there will be plenty of things to do with the kids, from an Irish art exhibition and film festival to Irish walking tours.

Time Out will be able to keep you up to date with all the London events for St Patrick’s Day https://www.timeout.com/london/st-patricks-day-in-london. Get ready for a very green weekend. Thank goodness you will be able to return to Chigwell, Loughton and Woodford after a busy St Patricks Day in London.
