It is that time of year again and after you have enjoyed your Chigwell, Loughton or Woodford Christmas and time to see what kind of promise you will make to yourself for the New Year.
Resolutions come in many different forms. Some people like to make a promise to try and change a bad habit something they may have been battling with like smoking or eating too much junk food. Other like to think more about developing a positive habits such as exercising more or taking up volunteering in their community.
Some 4,000 years ago it was the ancient Babylonians who were said to have been the first people to make New Year's resolutions. They were actually the first to hold recorded celebrations in honour of the New Year. But for them the New Year began not in January but in mid-March, when the crops were planted.
After them it was the Romans who started the tradition of making promises on the 31st December. Janus was a mythical God of early Rome who had two faces, one looking forward to the future and the other looking back to the past. The ancient Romans believed Janus could forgive them for their wrongdoings in the year, just passed, so would offer him gifts and make promises, believing that Janus would see this and bless them in the year ahead. In this way the New Year’s resolution was born.
Regardless of whatever resolution you commit to, or not, in 2018 in Chigwell, Loughton or Woodford we wish you a very Happy New Year from all of the team at Lawlors.
